Italian photographer Giacomo d'Orlando awarded a Visura Grant

Visura in partnership with The Current, a center for contemporary art, is delighted to announce Italian documentary photographer Giacomo d'Orlando as the third recipient of the 2022 Visura Grant for Visual Journalists

d'Orlando will receive a $2000 cash prize to continue working on “Symbiosis”, a long-term investigation of the relationship between the climate change, marine ecosystem, and coastal communities, highlighting the positive solution aimed to preserve the environment.

This grant is an opportunity for up to 5 Visura members who identify as visual artists, journalists and/or storytellers working on self-funded long-term projects. The theme for this grant was focused on visual stories about climate change, environmental justice, gender equality, racial justice, and human rights.

Giacomo d'Orlando is an Italian self-taught documentary photographer currently based in Western Australia— concentrated in telling stories about environmental issues. His work looks at how the increasing pressure brought about by climate change are reshaping the planet and how present day society is reacting to the new challenges that will characterize our future.

The projects he works on are aimed to sensitize people about the priority of preserving our environment for the generations to come, underlining the absence of borders in fighting these common challenges.

He has received numerous recognitions for his work such as POYi in Science & Natural History, POYi Environmental Vision Award, Sony World Photography Award, BarTur Award for Climate Change, UN World Ocean Day Photo Contest, Gomma Grant among the others. His projects have also been exhibited worldwide in photographic festivals, galleries, and published on the most prominent magazine in the photojournalism industry.

In 2022, The Current and Visura partnered in an effort to enhance the human experience through the visual arts. Together, the art center and media tech startup awarded an annual residency, announced the recipients of this year’s 2022 Visura Grant for Visual Journalists, and collaborated in a group exhibition. The partnership was in part also made possible with the support of an anonymous donor, who in 2022 made a generous contribution to The Current.
